Last April we lost Levon Helm and things haven’t been the same since. But the music and spirit live on, even though an unpaid mortgage and medical bills remain. One way to help: purchase something directly from Levon’s General store. In Levon’s last words, you can help “keep it goin’.”
To hear our remembrance of Levon, as we all some poems and funny stories from poets, check this out.
Full discloser: Sal went to Susquehanna University and graduated from the Writers Institute, same as me. Oh, it’s also set in my favorite city: Pittsburgh. Naturally, I’m going to read this book. But here’s the thing: it’s really great. This is the most timely book I’ve read this year, perfectly tapping into the culture of today’s youth. Sure, there are references to pop culture, video games, social media, and comic books, but don’t let that scare you: this is an amazingly literate debut that crackles off the page with equal parts humor and sadness. This is an insightful novel that never falls prey to hipster-ism. If you have a twenty-something on your list, buy this book.
