You Know You Want It: December 5th

If you’ve paid close attention to our podcast and website, you’ve probably noticed that a new member has joined our gang. His name is Jugsy Green, my beloved 1/3 gallon Coleman water jug. You should get your own jug. They make wonderful friends. You’ll never be lonely again. Or, you will, but you’ll be lonely and hydrated.

Jay: Ten Thousand Saints by Eleanor Henderson

Technically, Ten Thousand Saints came out in 2011, but I didn’t get around to reading it until this year. And let me tell you, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Set in the 1980s, this is a story about drugs, hardcore punk, the straight-edge scene, family, and heartbreak. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This novel—a debut, no less—spins all of these themes, mixes them with compelling characters, and amazingly pulls all of it off. Henderson crafts the kind of meaty sentences that you can savor. She tells the kind of story that makes you read past your bedtime.
