Wanted: Christmas Song Book

Ho, ho, ho! Patrick and Jay are busy preparing some truly AWESOME holiday themed episodes of Talus, Or Scree for the coming weeks. Hopefully everyone has already subscribed to our podcast on iTunes. You won’t want to miss this.

So, we’ve been wondering: what’s the best book about Christmas music? And not like the type of book you see at the counter inside Hallmark. But a serious exploration of Christmas music. Many of you might not know this, but Jay is an expert on country music. Well, maybe expert is a little strong, but he knows his stuff. And Patrick? Mention the name Levon Helm to him and watch Patrick’s eyes glass over like a drunk in the snow. The point is: both country music and Levon Helm are the subjects of very good books and scholarly works. Christmas music? Well, it gets a bad wrapping job (oh, Christmas pun!). So I’m searching, I’m looking. Well, I can’t find a thing. But, of course, Krampus is all over the place! There’s a guy named Monte Beauchamp who is apparently a Krampus expert. He’s got loads of books with Krampus art. Turns out, this Beauchamp fellow is no slouch. Dude worked with R. Crumb! And he likes Krampus too? Well, I’m not sure anything is cooler than that. Who knows? Maybe we’ll have Krampus on the podcast? And if you don’t know Krampus yet, just wait. Okay, I need to get some songs. In the meantime, if there are some books out there you love, leave a comment.

In the meantime, here’s a debut from our 77 Santas collection—a little Christmas on the bayou from Johnnie Allan.

And, of course, what would Christmas be if not for a weird and sweet German recording.

And hey! It’s Tuesday. Why not go nuts! This one is too wild to be described.

Congratulations to the new blog, fantastic!

What do you think about more bluesy Christmas songs? I feel like this year has a more bluesy feeling to it. I heard a song recently, Christmas Blues, and found it great, kind of like Elvis feeling, but quite fast, and a bit of Beatles in between … I loved it …

Tom Levon was the singer, just found it again!

  3. Stephen says:

Grillade did a pretty darn good cover of “Just a Sad Christmas” last year.
